5 Things to STOP Doing Before Your Next Game

Uncategorized Oct 13, 2026

Why spend hours digging with a shovel when you could move the same amount of dirt with a lever?

The point: Sometimes the smallest changes produce the biggest results.

The same is true for an athlete's mental game.

Here are 5 simple changes an athlete can make that are free, take almost no time, and can have a disproportionate impact on their confidence, mental game, and performance.

  1. Stay off social media for 2 hours before competing. Protect your focus and confidence from unnecessary distractions, comparisons, and outside noise.

  1. Stop checking other athletes' stats, rankings, and scholarship offers. If comparing yourself to others is stealing your confidence or joy, stop feeding that habit.

  1. Stop reading recruiting rankings, projections, and predictions every day. You don't need constant updates about where other people think you stand.

  1. Stop participating in conversations where teammates criticize or gossip about other players. Negativity and drama can quickly become distractions that hurt your enjoyment of the game. At a minimum, walk away. Better yet, step up and call out the behavior.

  1. Create & Use a Reset Routine. This is the highest-leverage mental game tool an athlete can use to see an immediate difference. It works by intentionally redirecting your thoughts and changing your physical state. A routine like this will give you courage when fear rises, resilience when a mistake lingers, and confidence when belief wavers.

Takes 2 minutes to create, 2 seconds to apply.

P.S. We have 3 spots open for 1-on-1 Mindset Coaching. Many athletes have heard (usually from their parents) what they should be doing, but many don't do it.

They might just need to hear it from someone else in a different way.

That's where we come in.

Head to www.performfree.com and apply. The only way for your athlete to get started is for us to first have a phone call to make sure it's the right fit.
