1 Mental Skill Most Athletes Are Missing

Uncategorized Jul 28, 2026

The meaning you are currently giving to that thing that happened (a recent injury, what coach did or said, your poor performance last game, etc) is the only thing that matters right now.

Your present determines your past.

If you have recently experienced some sort of setback and are struggling to make sense of it, this is for you.

Your present determines your past (and your future determines your present).

At least, it can. And it should

But for many, they last their past determine their present, which never leads to anything good.

Example: I got injured this week and I am out for the next 2 months.

Past Determining My Present:

my season is over

this means I will miss 2 chances to be seen by college scouts

I might not get to play in college now--> everything I've worked for up to this point was for nothing.

Determining My Past in the Present:

I am not the first one this has happened to

there are many others who have experienced this same thing, and ended up succeeding

this may be the best thing that has ever happened to my in my career

there are thousand of schools out there and many coaches who wouldn't have seen me play in the next two months anyway

I will come out of this a stronger and smarter player

the next college coach that sees me will see a better version of me

I will rehab relentlessly, work on my mental game, eat like a pro, and grow in my team leadership during this time.

This is far from "positive thinking".

This is realizing that meaning is choice and meaning = experience.

And you get to choose what things mean to you.

What is the past thing you've been dwelling on and allowing to steal your joy and confidence in the present?

Today, FLIP THE SCRIPT. I talk about how to do this extensively in  the book Athlete! I'm Talking to You (free audiobook in the P.S) and in Don't Let One Mistake Ruin the Game.

It's a skill every athlete, every person needs to develop.

Eventually, you will become the kind of person who might dwell on the past for 5 seconds but you then automatically shift and begin to allow your present to determine what the past means.
